Mass at the Serbs
1. SAKKOS – BISHOP”S VESTMENT
The vestment is an undergarment with an archaic cut (T-cut).
2. EPITRACHELION – STOLE
This piece had to be put on directly over the vestment, the priest could not say mass
without it.
3. PHELONION – ROBE
The vestment was protected, covered with this long, loose, sleeveless piece, gold on the
outside, and symbolised the Divine Providence, which guards and takes care of
everything.
4. STICHARION – SURPLICE
Deacons or altar assistants wore this child-sized shirt, which colour, red, refers to Christ”s
martyrdom.
5. COVER OF AN ICON STAND
This blanket could have been made at the beginning of the 19th century and used to
cover an icon stand with the church’s patron saint on it.
