They came from the east

1. BELT BUCKLE
This so-called cast bronze buckle with engraved tendrils was found in a cemetery of the
Avar period.

3. SILVER BELT DECORATIONS
These silver belt fittings were found in one of the rich graves of the Avar cemetery, they
could have decorated a belt or clothing articles made of leather.

4. BIT
This horse tool was found in an Avar horseman”s grave, the mounted horse was lying to
the left of its owner.

5. SPEARHEAD
The iron weapon was found in an avar horseman’s grave, they found it on the back of
horse, and the presence of the kopja (spear like weapon) and the iron stirrup in the grave
indicates that the man buried there was a member of the famous and infamous Avar
armoured cavalry, or a member of the elite.

6. A PAIR OF STIRRUPS
The pair of stirrups was found in a grave from the Avar period (the Avars were the first to
use iron stirrups in Europe), and the presence of the iron stirrup and the kopja (spear like
weapon) in the grave may indicate that the man buried there was a member of the famous
and infamous Avar armoured cavalry, or a member of the elite.

7. A PAIR OF EARRINGS
This typical Eastern bronze jewellery was found in Early Avar grave, in which a little girl
probably was buried.

8. BUTTONS
The bronze buttons could also decorate women’s and men’s clothes, the bridle of the
horse in the Avar period, these five buttons probably belonged to a little girl’s dress.

9. FOOTWEAR ORNAMENTS
The 35 pieces of gilded silver ornaments were probably used on leather shoes, as
indicated by the studs or rivets on the back.

10. SABRETACHE ORNAMENTS
The gilded silver coins with rectangular flower patterns were mostly used to decorate the
front of a sabretache.

12. ORNAMENTS
The small arrowheads shaped and pointed ornaments decorated the quiver, wearables,
horse tools, belts.

13. HAIR RINGS
The most characteristic clothing item in the early Árpád period cemeteries is the
S-shaped hair hoop, which was used to tie the hair together in braids, they were fastened
on a ribbon or a piece of leather.

18. TORQUES
This torques was made with a simple, yet spectacular technique: they folded a long
bronze wire in half, formed a loop at the end, and then folded the threads on top of each
other to achieve a twisted effect.

21. ARMLET
This bronze bracelet has been twisted from several wires, so it looks like the strands of
wire have been woven.

22. PENDANT
The half-moon shaped bronze pendant with animal head endings was found in a child’s
tomb, probably hung around the child’s neck and it had an apotropaic role.

23. BEADWORK
Adult women and girls wore these glass or glass paste bead necklaces.

25. SICKLE
This type of sickle was a rare and valuable tool during the Hungarian Conquest and Árpád
period.

26. CAULDRON
Two vertically drilled holes on the rim of the clay pot facing each other made it possible to
hang the pot over an open-air fire and cook in it.
